The Harold R. Turner Collection

Lt. Col. Harold R. Turner was the first Commander of White Sands Proving Ground.  He was the Commander from July 9, 1945 to Aug. 3, 1947 and not only guided the initial development of our missile and space programs, but the development of White Sands Proving Ground organization and infrastructure.  Much of that infrastructure remains in use today.  Later promoted to Colonel, he was assigned the task of establishing the Long Range Test Center, which later became known as Cape Canaveral and even later as Cape Kennedy.

His collection of documents and photos was donated to the Museum Archival Holdings by his son, Mr. Gary Turner of El Paso, Texas.
